Oven baked salmon recipe

It is a ridiculously easy 20 minute salmon recipe, salmon is baked and then drizzled with a creamy lemon garlic butter sauce. It takes about 5 minutes to make the sauce. I like to do it while salmon is baking. The combination of pan juices from salmon and creamy sauce creates a fantastic salmon dish!
Best part is that you will need simple ingredients you most likely have in your kitchen to make this quick and healthy dinner!

INGREDIENTS FOR BAKED SALMON WITH LEMON BUTTER GARLIC CREAM SAUCE

  • Salmon fillets – use the salmon fillets of the same size as this guarantees that they will be evenly cooked.
  • Old-style Dijon mustard – can be left out or subbed for regular Dijon mustard.
  • Garlic – use the MINCED garlic as it is more flavorful and you won’t feel pieces of raw garlic. It will be fully cooked.
  • Cream – I recommend to use heavy cream for a better result. However, even half and half will work really well.
  • Butter – the recipe calls for butter, but olive oil can be used also.
  • Lemon – salmon pairs really well with lemon and helps to balance all the flavors.

What temp Should Salmon Be Cooked to

Bake salmon (uncovered) in the preheated oven at 425°F/ 220°C with the rack in the center of the oven.

How long to bake salmon at 425

Baking time will depend on the thickness of salmon fillets. It usually takes 6 minutes per ½-inch (1 cm) thickness of fillet.
½-inch (1 cm) thickness:

  • MEDIUM DONE: 4 minutes
  • WELL DONE: 6 minutes

0.7 inch (2 cm) thickness:

  • MEDIUM: 10 minutes
  • WELL DONE: 13-15 minutes

Don’t over bake salmon because it will be dry!

How to know when salmon is done

The salmon’s internal temperature should reach 145°F/ 61°C in the thickest part. Use an instant thermometer to check the doneness. If you don’t have it, check with a fork. Flesh will fall apart and will easily flakes once it is cooked.

I used Dijon Old Style Mustard. It is characterized by its grainy texture. It goes really well with this baked salmon. You can get it online))).

  13. Linda says

Could you just pour the sauce over it before baking ? Or would it come out weird due to the cream ?

    Reply

    • chefjar says

Hi Linda! Honestly, I'm not entirely sure about pouring the sauce over before baking, especially if it's cream-based. Cream sauces can sometimes separate or curdle when exposed to high heat. It might be safer to bake it without the sauce and then pour the warm sauce over after baking.

FAQs

Do you bake salmon covered or uncovered? ›

Baked salmon is best when cooked at 425°F in the oven.

Even thicker fillets don't take long. We recommend baking the salmon uncovered. Simply rub the fillets with a little oil, sprinkle them with salt and pepper, then place them in the roasting pan skin-side down before popping them in the oven.

How does Martha Stewart bake salmon? ›

Bake the salmon at 275°F for 20 minutes, or at 300°F for 10 to 15 minutes. These oven temperatures and cook times work every time, regardless of how you season and glaze your filet of salmon, and whether the skin is on or off.

When you bake salmon do you put the skin side up or down? ›

Always bake salmon with the skin side down as this will help protect the fillet from the heat of the pan and it will help the salmon retain its juices and cook evenly. When it's time to serve the salmon, the skin will come off really easily as you slide a spatula between the fillet and the skin. DON'T Overcook.

How to cook salmon like a chef? ›

Heat the oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering. Cook the salmon, skin side up, until golden and crisp, about 4 minutes. Resist the urge to fiddle with the fillets as they cook. Letting the fish sear untouched in hot oil creates a lovely, flavorful, and golden crust.

Should you sear salmon before baking? ›

Roasting salmon fillets in the oven gives you beautiful, succulent fish that doesn't require constant attention. This method, which we recommend if you're cooking four or fewer fillets, has you sear the fish in a pan on the stovetop first, which crisps the skin delectably.

Is it better to pan fry or oven bake salmon? ›

Pan-frying or pan-searing is one of the best ways to cook salmon fillets. It's quick, easy, and gives the fish that perfect crispy, crunchy skin. A simple pan-fried salmon is the secret to a flavorful and healthy weeknight dinner in 30 minutes or less.

What is the difference between roasting and baking salmon? ›

A Difference in Temperature

Both roasting and baking involve cooking with dry, ambient heat, usually in an oven. Roasting temperatures are typically above 400 degrees Fahrenheit while baking temperatures are about 375 degrees and below.

What is the secret to the best salmon? ›

A dry brine gives you firmer, juicier fish fillets with kettle-chip-crisp skin. Credit... Gentl and Hyers for The New York Times.

Is it better to bake salmon at 350 or 400? ›

What is the best temperature to bake salmon? 400°F (205°C) is ideal as it allows the fish to gain colour and the skin to become crispy. If you prefer a milder method, you can bake it at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes or until done. The salmon baked at 425°F (215°C) produces tender, creamy fillets that cook quickly.
